About the Map

This map and associated directory was created as a part of a series of projects within the Centre of Research Excellence in Food Retail Environments for Health (RE-FRESH).

You can find out more information about the Centre here: RE-FRESH

The directory is intended to aid in the more effective design of policies, strategies and research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, through describing the uniqueness of the remote retail setting. It will help to illustrate the diversity of the remote retail setting and aid in meaningful impacts on food security and the health of residents living in remote areas.

The Directory has a specific focus on stores that sell groceries in (principally) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in remote areas. The Directory excludes roadhouses, hotels, and ‘takeaway’ stores (which sell cooked food for later consumption) that stock groceries, as their principal function is not grocery retail, as well as major supermarkets (including Independent Grocers of Australia stores).
